Creating a Toponymic Map of the Middle Volga Region Based on the Materials of the P. S. Pallas Expedition of 1768–1769

The paper presents a study of toponyms attested by Academician Peter Simon Pallas during his expedition in the Middle Volga region (on territory modern Samara and Ulyanovsk regions) 1768–1769. data is retrieved from Travels to Different Provinces Russian State, published originally German language. book has never been considered as source on historical toponymy Region which explains authors’ interest it. first part provides various linguo-statistical local found Pallas: their distribution types geographical objects; phonetic, morphological, structural, other changes that these place names have undergone over 250 years. second contains toponymic map created Pallas’s records. uses GIS technologies information mentioned belonging different cultural strata: most ancient are Iranian, later ones — Finno-Ugric Turkic, latest Slavic. On one hand, materials help restore linguo-geographic picture ethnic groups formerly region, they provide basis for further linguistic research into regional toponymy.
